“As I always work with small tools, we certainly perceive less this triturated texture of the image. We lose ourselves more easily in the work which becomes a real landscape to go through, a space.”

Raphaëlle Peria uses the image as a support to draw. For the past few years, she has been developing a scratching technique that she uses to reveal new forms and elements of the photograph that are most evocative of the subject she is approaching. Landscapes, natural elements and ecosystems are at the heart of her artistic approach and are the starting points for her travels..  By scraping, she lets the white appear. This technique by withdrawal summons the memory of the presence of living beings and elements that inhabit natural environments.

Recent press

“It is the most beautiful discovery of this edition. By scratching the surface of photographs with a scalpel or a dentist's drill, this young French artist draws by subtraction, tracing fine white lines, as light as hair.” Drawing Now 2019 : nos 10 artistes coups de cœur, Joséphine Bindé in beauxarts.com, March 2019

“The artist explores the materiality of the photographic image: she lends it both a sculptural dimension, through various games of volume and covering, and a pictorial one, thanks to the manual retouching she performs.”
5 jeunes artistes à suivre + cover, François Salmeron, in Le Quotidien de l'art, special edition, March 2019

“Ethereal as a memory, from the fidelity of the photographic retranscription, the image becomes under the instruments of recomposition of Raphaëlle Peria a mental landscape, a reality increased by the loss. In negative, she appropriates the world to draw a new imaginary order which develops, in mirror, like a rhizome which deafens under the plastic film and threatens the integrity of the image itself.”
Raphaëlle Peria – Galerie Papillon, Guillaume Benoit in slash-magazine, September 2017
